City law firms may be feeling the heat from their associates as the latest pay war rages, complicated by demands for more realistic partnership prospects and a better work-life balance, but firms in the south of England have been quietly altering their remuneration systems for some time now.

This year has seen a number of methods adopted in the battle to retain and attract the best lawyers. Bristol-based TLT reached the end of its year-long lockstep review this summer, while southeast firm Thomas Eggar’s remuneration committee drew up plans to introduce performance-related pay for equity partners.
