The NCUA has updated its list of credit unions affected byHurricane Sandy, shrinking it considerably as credit unionshave restored operations.

Public Affairs Specialist John Fairbanks said of the 838 creditunions initially affected by the storm, 729 were fully operationalas of Monday afternoon.

Three credit unions in New York remain closed or notoperational. In New Jersey, the hardest hit state, 31 credit unions remainclosed, 24 are not operational and 11 have yet to verify theirstatus with the NCUA.

Fairbanks said areas in New Jersey still struggling to recoverfrom the storm include parts of Monmouth, Union, Hunterdon andMiddlesex Counties, as well as areas of the City ofNewark.

Public transportation is still down in some areas, which hasaffected credit union staffing and accessibility, he said. Inaddition, in some areas phone and internet are still down, roadwaysremain blocked and fuel is in short supply.

And handful of credit unions remain closed or non-operational inPennsylvania. However, the list no longer includes any affectedcredit unions in Virginia or West Virginia.
