CUNA President & CEO Bill Cheney reacted to a report Monday by AmericanBanker that Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said a vote on S. 2231 has beendelayed until this summer.

“If the banks want to go to sleep on this legislation, that'sfine with us,” Cheney said. “The fact is, however, Senateleadership remains committed to a floor vote on this bill, apromise Sen. Schumer reiterated again today.”

Schumer spokesman Brian Fallon was quoted by the publication assaying the MBL vote would not come up until May or even June, because the Senate has a busy schedule. That statement echoes whatCUNA Senior Vice President of Legislative Affairs Ryan Donovansaid this morning during the trade publication's weekly presscall.

Donovan said legislation addressing postalreform, cyber security and violence against women would likelytake priority over credit union MBL on the Senate calendar.

“We have to be a little less concerned with when the votehappens and more concerned about winning the vote,” he said.

Donovan added that to a certain extent, credit unions have somecontrol over when the bill goes to a vote in the Senate.

“If we're able to say with a tremendous amount of confidencethat we have 60, that helps expedite the vote,” he told CreditUnion Times.
