MADISON, Wis.-Scott Earl, former Utah League of Credit Unions head, will coordinate CUNA's disaster relief efforts. "After the camera lights go off, and the crowds melt away, the needs of those in the disaster areas do not disappear," CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica said. "Our association's efforts to provide relief and support are a longer-term endeavor, and our hiring Scott as director of disaster recovery and preparedness reflects our commitment." As his first order of business, Earl traveled to Louisiana Oct. 17 with Mica to get a first-hand look at how credit unions are restoring operations after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the subsequent flooding. They will be touring the area with Louisiana Credit Union League representatives, visiting credit unions, and meeting with local credit union officials. In addition to being the former president of ULCU, Earl also served as the credit union liaison for the Children's Miracle Network. "Scott's experience as a league leader particularly gives him insight and contacts within the credit union system that are unmatched," Mica said. "With his knowledge of credit unions, he is equipped to pull together a coordinated, sustained relief effort quickly and effectively." Earl will serve as the new director of disaster recovery, coordinating CUNA and the leagues relief efforts-such as administering the Adopt-A-Credit Union program and allocating resources-through the end of 2006. CUNA and CUNA Mutual will jointly fund the position though CUNA would not disclose the amount.
