HARAHAN, La. – As Tropical Storm Cindy made its way toward the southern coast of Louisiana last Tuesday, the Louisiana Credit Union League closed its offices two hours early to enable employees to get home and secure their personal belongings. Cindy came ashore late that night, crashing through the Gulf Coast communities of Grand Isle, Plaquemines and St. Bernard. New Orleans and surrounding areas reported 3-4 inches of rain and 70-mph winds. At press time, damage from the weakening storm appeared relatively minor. Outside of one bridge closure, damage consisted primarily of downed power lines, some roof damage and flooding in low-lying areas. Only one injury had been reported as a result of the storm. League offices, which had notified member credit unions of their 3 p.m. closure Tuesday afternoon and the likelihood of remaining closed until noon on Wednesday July 6, reopened Wednesday morning. "Although the rain and wind was strong and certain places are without power, most of the League staff is back at work. So far, we have not heard of any problems from credit unions as a result of the storm," said Alicia Blanda, the League's Director of Communications. "Unfortunately, our e-mail service is not functioning right now."
