ST. PAUL, Minn. – More than 170 credit union professionals and volunteers were in the halls of the state capitol Jan. 26 to visit with members of the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate for the Minnesota Credit Union Network's annual lobbying event. "Participation in Credit Union Day at the Capitol puts a human face on credit unions, which is the strongest advantage we have over the banks," said MnCUN President/CEO Kevin Chandler, who served as a state senator from 1993-1997 before coming to work at MnCUN. Among the legislators who addressed attendees at the day's luncheon were Rep. Rim Wilkin, chairman of the House Commerce & Financial Institutions Committee, Sen. Geoff Michel (R-Edina) and Sen. Katie Sieben (DFL-Newport). Attendees also heard from Deputy Commissioner of the Financial Examinations Division Kevin Murphy, and Gov. Tim Pawlenty's Chief of Staff Dan McElroy. Credit union attendees used Credit Union Day at the Capitol to distribute personalized mugs to all state legislators. MnCUN Director of Governmental Affairs Joe Mathews said the legislators were very excited to receive their mugs. "Things can get kind of serious in the Capitol from time to time. Giving the legislators their mugs was an opportunity to lighten up the mood for awhile," said Mathews.
