FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Washington Credit Union League and Verity Credit Union have honored a 60-year old grandmother of 10 for her help in nabbing an identity thief. Verity CU staffers had called the police to report a man was trying to use an account that wasn't his. The police cuffed him and were leading him outside when he escaped. Enter Janice Lewis who was ready to do a little Christmas shopping at department store JC Penney. When she realized a handcuffed man was running in her direction Lewis grabbed the jacket of the man and held him until police tackled him. "Your grandchildren are quite fortunate to have such a heroic role model," said WCUL President/CEO John Annaloro, in a letter to thank Lewis. "On behalf of the financial services industry, I am writing to commend your bravery and commitment to the public's well-being, before consideration of your own safety. The actions you undertook this weekend exemplified a unique sense of community responsibility, and the credit union philosophy of `people helping people.' " Local police also commended Lewis for her quick action. " We often have citizens assist us, but it's less frequent that they physically step in," Lynnwood Police Cmdr. Paul Watkins said. "We don't advise it, but we applaud Mrs. Lewis' efforts." To show his appreciation, Verity CU CEO Bill Hayes also provided Lewis a $100 gift certificate to JC Penny since she didn't get to finish her shopping that day.
