MOUNDS VIEW, Minn. – It's not your average check, says Liberty Check Printers – it's SuperCheck and it's packed with fraud deterrents. Liberty will be debuting its new SuperCheck at CUNA's GAC this week. The check is a product of SAFEChecks and was designed by SAFEChecks in conjunction with master con Frank Abagnale. The check features 12 security features, while the average check has about four or five such features said Paul Malone, VP of check printers for Liberty. Malone said features like a real watermark, more fluorescent fibers, the ability to react to 85 different chemicals, fine lines in the background that blur when the check is altered, and others make the SuperCheck more secure than standard checks. The increased security comes at a price. Malone said it's a premium product that typically sells for $29.95 a box and $34.50 a box with duplicates. That's about twice the cost of regular checks. "There's demand. Not overwhelming demand because it's a high-price product," said Malone. He did point out that SAFECheck has been in business for over a decade with this as its primary product. The check has only been available to companies, but now SAFECheck is moving to the consumer market. Check fraud losses in the U.S. tally between $10 to $20 billion a year. Malone admitted that much of that is not from altering checks, but that is a large part of check fraud. "We get multiple reports every year of people washing checks and changing amounts. This check helps the holder feel more comfortable. It's very hard to alter or forge," said Malone. SAFECheck President Greg Lister will join Liberty representatives at the Liberty booth (#520) during GAC.
