WASHINGTON-After what fortunately turned out to be a false alarm, U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union is back up and running. Early last week, an employee discovered a note at the credit union's main branch located in Hart Senate Office Building referring to a small pox vaccination being available by the end of the year, according to U.S. Capitol Police Deputy Chief Marsha Krug. The branch was closed for about an hour Monday morning after an employee discovered the note at approximately 11 a.m., Senate Federal Credit Union Vice President of Communications Bob Klonoski said. No one was being permitted to enter or leave the building. "The police don't treat this sort of thing lightly," Klonoski commented. After conducting two field tests for eight different chemical and biological agents, including anthrax and small pox, no contaminates were found on the note, Krug said. She said the note appeared to be someone's personal notes they had accidentally dropped about getting a small pox vaccine. Eighteen people, members and employees were in the federal credit union at the time, Krug said. According to Klonoski, the branch has a total of 20 employees. As to the credit union staff's response, Krug commented, "Given the circumstances, that the anthrax was in their building, we would prefer if people would call us." The Hart Senate Office Building was shut down last year after a letter to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) determined to contain anthrax was discovered. "I'd rather be safe than sorry," Klonoski agreed. "It may seem excessive, but having gone through the anthrax thing.it doesn't hurt to be extra cautious about things." Klonoski's office is located in Senate Federal Credit Union's corporate headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, because there is not enough room at the main branch for offices. [email protected]
