I read with considerable personal interest Credit Union Times Editor-in-Chief Elaine Barr's article in the July 17th issue concerning Gary Wolter. I say "with personal interest" because I was the president of Pen Air FCU who hired Gary in 1961. Gary was a unique young man when he was interviewed. He had studied for a Christian Service career, but for personal reasons he had taken a job in retail credit management. He was seeking a meaningful opportunity to serve and he found it at Pen Air. In 1960, Pen Air changed its field of membership from an all civilian employees of NAS Pensacola numbering 6,000, to include military located on the five navy installations around Pensacola, and a potential membership of 25,000 created an explosion of opportunity to serve. Under Betty Petree, then office manager, later president and Gary Wolter as a loan officer, the members were well served. Gary was too talented to stay as a loan officer and our opportunities for advancement too limited. I called Bill Smith, managing director of the Alabama Credit Union League for whom I had worked as Education Director when I first started in credit union service, and I told him about Gary. Bill told me to start training him in federal and Alabama credit union law and he probably could find a place for him in about six months. Within four weeks, Bill flew into Pensacola, interviewed Gary and met his lovely wife.the rest is history. I congratulate Gary for his loyal and unselfish service to the credit union organization, and I thank Credit Union Times for recognizing Gary as a "Mover & Shaker."
