US Federal Credit Union, Bloomington, Minn., has raised $4,817.50 for the Children's Miracle Network in a three-month sale of Happenings Books, an Entertainment Fund-Raising coupon book. A $10.25 profit on each book went directly to the Credit Unions for Kids, which benefits the Children's Miracle Network and the Gillette Children's Hospital. Monies will be used to help and support children with illnesses and their families. Fifty-one credit union employees sold over 470 books and one employee, Jan Dols of the Fridley, Minnesota branch stood apart from the rest by selling 135 of those books. US Federal employees donate their time and over thousands of dollars each year on many community projects including Meals-on-Wheels, an annual Paint-a-Thon, bake sales, the Twin Cities Area Combined Federal Campaign, a Child Identification Program, and other activities. Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, Anchorage, has donated $11,905 to Children's Miracle Network to benefit Providence Children's Hospital in Anchorage and the Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. The monies were raised through sales of CMN holiday music CDs with a 100% matching contribution from Alaska USA. Alaska USA's 32 branches in Alaska and Washington participated in the holiday music program for the third year in a row. All the contributions from Alaska USA will directly benefit the children receiving care in CMN hospitals in Alaska and Washington. Educational Employees Credit Union, Fresno, Calif., has sponsored a civics videotape, which will be distributed to nearly 30,000 high school, junior college and community college students. The videotape entitled "Your Executive Branch and You" is a documentary that explains how the executive branch of government works in an effort to improve a citizen's understanding of the executive branch and the vital role it plays. The videotape is a joint effort from EECU and the Committee for Citizen Awareness. Anheuser-Busch Employees' Credit Union, St. Louis, Mo., has joined forces with more than 100,000 businesses nationwide, in participating in the fourth annual Job Shadow Day. Four students from Beaumont High School's Academy of Finance in St. Louis, Mo., visited the credit union's main office for a day of learning about various career opportunities. The students toured many of ABECU's departments and received an overview of how they relate. They also learned more about credit unions and the services they offer. Lunch was provided by the credit union. Job Shadow Day is a nationwide effort to introduce young people to the world of work by giving them an up-close look at the workplace. This year, more than a million high school students participated in the program nationwide. Utah League of Credit Unions, Salt Lake City, has raised over $13,000 for Primary Children's Medical Center during its seventh annual bowl-a-thon. Credit union members and employees bowled in shifts between 1 a.m. and 5 p.m. on a Thursday. The event continued Friday night in Carbon County. In all, more than 400 people from 40 credit unions participated, bowling over 1,050 games. Collectively, Utah credit unions expect to raise more than $80,000 by the end of this year. Cabrillo Credit Union, San Diego, has helped sponsor HodgePodge, an annual arts and crafts fundraiser benefiting the Scripps Ranch Library. The 12th annual fundraiser, raised approximately $2,300 for the Scripps Ranch Library. CCU supported the event by sponsoring an arts and crafts table and providing staffing for the event. This is the third year CCU has participated. In addition, the credit union has sponsored literacy fundraisers, 4th of July celebrations and holiday fundraisers to its support for the local community. Maine Credit Union League, Westbrook, has donated $10,000 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, which provides food to hunger organizations statewide. Sixty-two Maine Credit Unions and all eight Credit Union Chapters in the state participated in the 2000 Credit Union Campaign for Ending Hunger. The campaign raised a record-setting total of $143,000, bringing the total raised by Maine Credit Unions in the campaign's 11-year history to over $960,000 to help end hunger in Maine. California Credit Union League, Rancho Cucamonga, has held a raffle and raised more than $3,200 for the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, which supports professional growth opportunities for credit union leaders and the development of community -based financial literacy programs. The league raffled a Compaq Armada E500 laptop computer that Central State CU Lodi Branch Manager Lisa Henne won. All proceeds from the raffle will support Foundation programs. The computer was donated by the CO-OP Network and printing expenses for the raffle tickets were donated by Credit Union Direct Corporation. Pacific Service CU, Walnut Creek, Calif., has donated $5,000 to Children's Miracle Network as a corporate sponsor of Kids Day. Kids Day is an annual one-day event where volunteers sell special edition Fresno Bee newspapers. The paper features compelling patient stories and photographs about the vital pediatric medical care Valley Children's Hospital provides for one million residents. Employees of the Pacific Service CU Fresno branch and more than 3,000 other area volunteers spent their day selling the newspapers for as little as $1. All proceeds have been donated to Valley Children's Hospital.
