Federal circuit judge nominee Pamela Harris spent much of her confirmation hearing Tuesday on Capitol Hill explaining away past public statements, including legal analysis and political comments that raised opposition from Republican senators.

At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Harris that comments she made at an American Constitution Society panel in 2009 “troubled” him and “raise some concern” about her nomination for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
