On May 15, a Pennsylvania federal court ruled that Urban Outfitters had no coverage under its general commercial liability and umbrella policies for suits alleging that it requested and collected customer ZIP codes in violation of various state statutes. OneBeacon America Ins. v. Urban Outfitters, No. 13-5269, 2014 U.S. Dist. Lexis 67719 (E.D. Pa. May 15, 2014).

In complaints filed in three separate jurisdictions, class action plaintiffs alleged that Urban Outfitters Inc. requested credit card holders’ ZIP code information at checkout counters and matched the ZIP code information it collected with customers’ names and other personal information, such as phone numbers, addresses and credit card numbers, thereby violating state laws governing the use of personal information for commercial purposes.
